The task of the storyteller is to take us through his story, to point us to the beginning but also to show us the end. Worst of all, what makes a resolution so unlikely is that "we are in a condition which almost nobody recognizes and which perhaps nobody at all can recognize fully " (p. Is there reason to worry that the system is not yielding what it should? Arum and Roksa say yes, there is reason to worry. The US has enjoyed for many year a privileged place as a ‘gold standard’ for higher education around the world. Specifically, “… what if increased educational attainment is not equivalent to enhanced individual capacity for critical thinking and complex reasoning?” The concern is one with profound implications, considering that critical skills and complex reasoning are among the most fundamental competencies that American higher education institutions declare they will produce in their graduates today they also top the short list of skills that economists and others have deemed are vitally important for national competitiveness. In his acceptance speech for the Prince of Asturias Award, included at the end of the book, Cohen writes of his “deep association and confraternity with the poet Federico García Lorca,” from whom he learned the importance of voice - specifically, “never to lament casually.” It surprised me to read this, partly because Cohen’s lyric voice is much looser and more observational than Lorca’s. Leonard Cohen’s final book is a testament to the songwriter’s enduring and particular creative drive, which reveals itself here, as the book’s subtitle suggests, in poems, song lyrics, excerpts from his notebooks, and pen-and-ink self-portraits. ![]() The Candle Maker by Laura Thomas7/5/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() No, it seems God had other plans-better plans. V masquerades as one of the most famous rebels in British history, Guy Fawkes (15701606), complete with an eerily smiling face mask. Each of the chapter titles of V for Vendetta prominently features a word starting with “V.” He apparently took his alias from the Roman numeral “V” on the door of his room in which he was imprisoned.
